With a brief from Marpool primary school in Exmouth, Devon of simply” how can we rejuvinate this play area” and a limited budget Plantation gardening set to work!
Before work began:
The biggest problem here seemed to be that this muddy bank with a slide on it was suffering from years of ware and tare from generations of children enjoying running up and down a muddy slope, but this was eroding the soil and making a mess.
After giving it some thought, I had two ideas. To solve the problem of erosion, The slope needed to be terraced by a process of revetment. To reinforce the re-use and recycle theme that we are trying to install in the school I decided that the material we would use to build with should be used tyres.
Tyres are a strong but soft material which will last a long time without eroding, providing structural support to the slope so as to prevent the erosion of the soil. There are no protruding sharp or hard edges making them a great material for use on a childrens play area.
A top dressing of large barfk nuggets was added to keep the area clean and to add a cushioned surface.
